Interested in learning how to sew clothing for yourself ? Join us for an introduction to sewing clothing for the human form. People of ALL sizes are welcome! This is a 1-part intensive sewing class from 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday January 28th. There will be a break for lunch; feel free to bring something (a fridge and microwave are available) or get something delivered!
This course is for beginners, no sewing experience necessary! You will be able to chose between two patterns: the Willow Tank/Dress or Belvedere Waistcoat. You will learn how to make a garment from woven fabric from start to finish: Putting together a PDF pattern, deciphering the pattern, cutting the pattern to fit you, and finally garment construction. Some of the skills you will learn along the way include working with woven fabrics, darts, lining/bias tape finish, serger, and optional buttons/buttonholes. We will cover different types of seam finishes and you will be able to use the serger and/or coverstitch machine to finish your garment. If you don’t already know how to operate a sewing machine, that’s ok! You will learn how to operate the machines here at Seattle Makers.
What you get to take home: Your custom made garment!
Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 15+ (youth 15-16 must have a guardian present). No experience necessary. New sewers welcome!
What we’ll provide: Sewing pattern, sewing machines, pins, scissors, iron, ironing board.
What to bring: Enough pre-washed fabric for your chosen pattern, matching thread, required notions.
Please sign up at least 24 hours in advance. To check availability within 24 hours of this event’s start time, call 833-2-MAKE-IT.
OPTIONAL TRIP TO THE FABRIC STORE: If you do not feel comfortable sourcing all the materials on your own, there will be an optional trip to the Ballard JOANN Fabrics with Olivia on Tuesday Jan 24th at 7 pm. We we will measure ourselves, and source fabric and notions. Please sign up for this trip here: Fabric Sourcing Trip.
