Ceramics Wheel (4 Part Series)

This is a four part series. Signing up registers you for all of the following dates:

June 3 @ 7-9 pm
June 10 @ 7-9 pm
June 17 @ 7-9 pm
June 24 @ 7-9 pm

(Parking note: on June 17 and June 24, there are home games for the Ballard and Salmon Bay Football Clubs. Please plan ahead to arrive early, if needing to find a parking space. Our small, private lot may fill before 7 pm on these days. Street parking will also be in demand. If arriving by public transit, the Rapid Ride D is our nearest bus line. We also have bike parking available)

Get hands-on with clay in this four-week beginner series! You’ll learn the foundations of wheel throwing and how the full ceramic process works, including glazing and firing.

Over the course of the series, you’ll create your own ceramic pieces from start to finish. After learning to throw and trim your forms, your work will be bisque fired. Then you’ll return to glaze your pieces, choosing from a range of colors. We’ll fire them one final time, and you’ll return to pick up your finished pieces a few weeks after class is complete.

No experience needed—just bring your curiosity and be ready to get a little muddy!

What you will create: Fully finished, glazed and fired ceramic pieces crafted entirely by you.

Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 8+ (youth 8-17 must have a guardian present). No experience necessary.

What we’ll provide: We will provide all materials needed including wheels, clay, small tools, and glaze. We will fire your pieces in our kiln.

What to bring:  Pottery can be messy, so please dress in clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and non-slip shoes. Try to keep your fingernails trimmed as short as possible to make throwing easier and safer.

The series consists of 4 classes. Here’s the schedule for each class:

  • Week 1: Wedging, centering, and throwing – getting your hands dirty with the basics!
  • Week 2: Throwing practice – more guidance at the wheel
  • Week 3: Trimming – shaping and refining your pieces
  • Week 4: Glazing – adding color to your work

Experimentation and play is encouraged here! Between your first and last class, you are encouraged to come into the studio to practice on your own time during normal business hours. Time spent at the wheel is the biggest factor in learning how to throw, so definitely try to take advantage of practicing outside of class.
