Button Up Shirt (Clothing Construction 302)

** Note: this event will be held in person at the makerspace. Read our Covid-19 requirements for attendees here.

This sewing course will teach you how to create and fit your own button up shirt! Make it in a plaid flannel for a cozy PNW fall layer or a linen to combat the summer heat! Make it fancy or make it casual – the choice is yours! People of ALL sizes and genders are welcome! This is a 2-part intensive sewing class from 5pm – 8 pm on Friday September 22th and 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday September 23th.  There will be a break for lunch; feel free to bring something (a fridge and microwave are available) or get something delivered!

This course is for intermediate sewers who have completed at least three sewing projects. If you completed a previous clothing construction course at Seattle Makers or have experience elsewhere, you are welcome to join. The instructor will reach out to ensure you have the necessary background before the class starts.

Note: This class is not eligible for ‘free class coupons’ that come with ‘Maker’ and ‘Builder’ memberships, but is discounted for members.

There are a few options for this course: The Olivia Button Up, the Archer Button Up, and the Jensen Shirt are all available to make. One Friday we will assemble & cut out the pattern. You will be responsible for cutting out the fabric at home Friday night. The second day will be for construction. You will learn how to make a button up from start to finish: deciphering the pattern, cutting the pattern to fit you, and finally garment construction. The skills you will learn along the way are dependent on your pattern selection, but could include pockets, pattern matching, buttons, collars, cuffs, and more!

What you get to take home:  Your custom made shirt!

Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 15+ (youth 15-16 must have a guardian present).

What we’ll provide: Sewing machines, pins, scissors, iron, ironing board.

What to bring: Uncut pattern (can be printed or purchased, Seattle Makers can print a pattern if you don’t have access to a printer), enough pre-washed fabric for your chosen pattern, matching thread, required notions (buttons, interfacing, etc.). Expect to spend ~$50 on supplies.

Instructor: Olivia Lenz – check out her previous work here!

OPTIONAL TRIP TO THE FABRIC STORE: If you do not feel comfortable sourcing all the materials on your own, there will be an optional trip to the Ballard JOANN Fabrics with Olivia on Tuesday September 19th at 4:30 pm. We will measure ourselves, and source fabric and notions. Please sign up for this trip here: Fabric Sourcing Trip.

Please sign up at least 3 days  in advance. To check availability within 3 days of this event’s start time, call 833-2-MAKE-IT.
