Laser Notes

Duration:  2 hours
Difficulty:  Easy
Description: Give your work-from-home office a touch of style with a custom-designed wooden notepad box. Each person on your team will come up with a unique design, and learn how to prepare it for the laser cutter. We’ll laser cut your masterpiece, and ship it to you!

You’ll learn basic design skills to turn a drawing or digital image into a one-of-a-kind design. Add a quote, logo, or hand-drawn image, and etch it into a stylish wooden notepad box. Learn about laser cutters and watch your design emerge as a 90 watt laser blasts your design into a one-of-a-kind notepad. We’ll send your notepad box, paper, and everything you need to assemble and glue your box together.

Your event will be hosted on Zoom. We will start with an introduction to the makerspace and the exciting tools and opportunities we have here. We’ll then introduce your instructors, as well as the local non-profits we support through our team building events.

Next, you’ll dive into a workshop (35-45 minutes) to learn how to set up your design on Lightburn, the software that runs our laser cutters.  You can download a free 30-day trial of Lightburn here and get instructions on how to set it up here.  We’ll all create a design together, and then you’ll create your own.  Use your free design time to find images online, design something unique in the software, or draw by hand with pen and paper.  Your instructors will help with any questions and offer advice.

When your design is complete, you’ll email your file to the staff-operated lasers.  You can watch the magic happen as your design is etched into your masterpiece in real time.

*Note:  for larger teams, there may not be time to etch every design during your event.  We will etch any remaining designs after the event before we ship them out to each participant.

Finally, every participant chooses an organization to support with a portion of your event’s proceeds.  We’ll snap some team photos of your amazing creativity and say goodbye!

After the event, we’ll package up your unassembled notepad box with the notepad paper and ship them to each participant with a link to the instruction video on how to assemble at home. At home, you’ll remove the masking tape from both sides of your box (they are covered in masking tape to protect the surface from the laser’s smoke), glue your box together, and rubber band it while it dries. After drying for 30 minutes, it’s ready to fill with notepad paper!

Each person on your team will come up with a unique design, and together we’ll learn how to prepare it for the laser cutter.  Your team will get to watch as our 90 watt laser blasts away the powder coating to reveal your design on the shiny steel underneath.  Then we’ll ship them out to each member of your team!

GIVING BACK

We donate 5% of the revenue for each team building event we sell to one of our favorite non profits that support awesome makers and artists in the world. At your event, we’ll give you and your team a brief introduction to each, showcasing why they are INCREDIBLE, and you get to choose which one you want to donate to. So thank YOU for buying a team building event and helping us to give back.

We currently support the following organizations:

This year-round club for young Native women provides positive role modeling through strong teachers, mentors and program partners.  Their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculum emphasizes computer coding skills and expands opportunities for healthy futures.  Follow Native Girls Code (and their parent organization, the Na’ah Illahee Fund) on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Founded by brothers, Adam, Andrew, and Russell Powers, Key Tech is a non-profit mobile makerspace, bringing emerging technology to underrepresented areas.  As issues of systemic racism persist, and gaps in equality and income continue to grow in our society, the Powers brothers teach students to program by assessing everyday problems, drafting a solution and prototyping to solve issues themselves, and finally, share their solutions with the world.  Follow Key Tech Labs on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

This local chapter of a national non-profit provides opportunities and a supportive community to female-identifying students in order to broaden participation in tech and provide equitable opportunities to all.  From summer camps to our year-long high school program to our new college program, their programs provide a supportive and welcoming environment for girls and women to learn, create, and do while surrounded by mentors and friends.  Follow ChickTech Seattle on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
