Woodworking Basics: A Four-Week Series
Woodworking Basics is a four-part series designed to introduce new makers to essential tools, techniques, and shop policies, with a focus on safety and skill development. Over the course of the series, participants will gain confidence with core woodworking processes, become trained on eight tools, and finish the class with a completed project.
101 (Rough Breakdown)
Learn woodworking basics with tools like the miter saw and track saw. Topics include wood grain, kerf and tearout, creating cut lists, PPE, and material storage.
102 (Precise Breakdown)
Focus on precision cuts with the table saw. Practice rip and cross cuts, and learn key techniques like cutting spline strips and miters for accurate joinery.
103 (Joints and Assembly)
Master joinery with the table saw and router table. Learn dados, miters, and rabbets, and perfect glue-ups with an emphasis on safety and storage practices.
104 (Assembly and Finishing)
Explore finishing techniques with the palm router, spline jig, and sander. Learn finishing theory, safe material handling, and shop policies, plus tips for additional certifications.
What you will create: A handcrafted wooden box with lid, built from start to finish.
Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 16+ (youth 16–17 must have a guardian present). No prior woodworking experience is required.
What we’ll provide: All necessary tools, materials, and safety gear.
What to bring: Wear close-toed shoes and pants suitable for working in a woodshop.
