Swimwear/Bralette (Clothing Construction 302)

** Note: this event will be held in person at the makerspace. Read our Covid-19 requirements for attendees here.

Summer is coming to Seattle, so let’s gets prepared with some new swimwear! People of ALL sizes and genders are welcome! This is a 1-part intensive sewing class from 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday June 17th. Most of the available patterns can double as a bralette if you do not wish to use “swimsuit” material. There will be a break for lunch; feel free to bring something (a fridge and microwave are available) or get something delivered!

This course is for advanced beginner sewers who have completed at least one sewing project using knit materials. If you completed a previous clothing construction course at Seattle Makers or have experience elsewhere, you are welcome to join. The instructor will reach out to ensure you have the necessary background before the class starts.

You will be able to chose any pattern from Ellie & Mac’s swimwear line! There are masculine and feminine options! You will learn how to make a swim garment from knit fabric from start to finish: putting together a PDF pattern, deciphering the pattern, cutting the pattern to fit you, and finally garment construction. The skills you will learn along the way are dependent on your pattern selection, but will include working with knit fabrics as well as elastic/drawstring, zippers, and/or serging.

Because Seattle does not have a large availability of swimwear fabric, you will likely need to source fabric and notions online for this course. If you want support in sourcing fabric and notions for your project, there is an optional meetup at the Seattle Makers space on June 8 at 6pm to meet with the instructor and purchase your items. A great place to source swimwear is Knit Fabric.com or Mood.com.

What you get to take home:  Your custom made garment!

Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 15+ (youth 15-16 must have a guardian present).

What we’ll provide: Sewing machines, pins, scissors, iron, ironing board.

What to bring: Enough pre-washed fabric for your chosen pattern, matching thread, required notions.

Instructor: Olivia Lenz – check out her previous work here!
