Sewing Machine Basics

** Note: this event will be held in person at the makerspace. Read our Covid-19 requirements for attendees here.

This is a periodic sewing class with the project changing based on community interest. This week’s project will be: Tote Bag!

The finished tote bag will be similar to this one, but not reversible.

Curious about sewing but have found the task daunting? This class will demystify the sewing machine and set you up for sewing success!

You will learn the components of a sewing machine, terminology, operating a sewing machine, threading a machine, bobbin winding, stitch variations, seam types, materials, and planning for sewing projects.

Your instructor will go over the sewing machine components before guiding you through machine operation. You will first practice using the machine without fabric and then we will make the tote bag. Using the serger and finishing with bias tape will be covered in this class.

What you get to take home:  Your custom tote bag!

Whom it’s for: Anyone aged 11+ (youth 11-16 must have a guardian present). No experience necessary. New sewers welcome!

What we’ll provide: Sewing machines, thread, scissors, and materials (incl. Fabric, binding, etc.)

What to bring: A can-do attitude!

Please sign up at least 24 hours in advance. To check availability within 24 hours of this event’s start time, call 833-2-MAKE-IT.
