Claim
your roles
Roles in Discord grant special permissions based on your membership status.
Discord is a voice, video, and text chat app that’s used by tens of millions of people to talk and hang out with their communities and friends. Find out more on the Discord web site.
Roles are Discord’s way of adding users to groups that grant special permissions.
The “Member” role is automatically granted only to active members of the makerspace. This will grant access to some member-only channels in Discord, as well as tagging your username so @Staff and @Maketeers in Discord know that you’re a member.
In order to get the “Member” role, you have to claim it in the Discord app. Click on “Seattle Makers” in the top left, and select “Linked Roles” from the dropdown.
No, you don’t need to use the same email address for Discord as you’re using on the Seattle Makers website. As long as you’re logging in with the Discord account you want to use while linking your accounts, everything should work.
If your name looks incorrect in Discord, first check that your Seattle Makers website profile has your name set correctly. Then you can re-link your account to automatically set your nickname.
We strongly recommend that you use whatever name we should call you if you visited the makerspace in person, instead of a generic username. However, if you want to customize your nickname in Discord, you can do so by right-clicking on your user name, and selecting “Change Server Nickname”.
These are the permissions we request when linking your account, and what they’re used for:
- Access your username, avatar, and banner:
- This is the base permission that any app needs to connect to your account. We only use this information to show you your Discord username and avatar on this page (which you can use to confirm that you have linked the correct account).
- Join servers for you:
- This is only used to automatically add you to the Seattle Makers Discord server with a server nickname that matches the name in your Seattle Makers profile.
- Update your connection and metadata for this application:
- This allows us to create a “connection” between Discord and Seattle Makers for your account. This is used to automatically grant you roles in Discord based on your membership status.
You’ll need to leave the server with your old account, and then you can click here to unlink it. Then you should be able to link to a new Discord account. Note that you have to be signed in to the right Discord account in this browser!
