Internet of Things (IoT): Home Automation with Local Control

This class is an introduction to IoT: The Internet of Things. Often also called “Home Automation”, it is not limited to things in the home, but applies to any collection of smart sensors, switches, actuators and displays that share information and control. This class focuses on using open-source software and a self-contained, local server without reliance on external communication. Please note: this session is a discounted, members-only preview class, where we will be testing what works and what needs improving in this new class.

What you’ll do: We will learn basic Raspberry Pi configuration, and learn how it can be used to collect information about and control various smart devices that connect to it. Each student will configure their own Raspberry Pi, they will reflash a commercial smart switch with open-source firmware, and they will assemble a radar-based distance and presence sensor. We will then connect the two with a basic automation to turn the smart switch on when someone is present. The students will keep their Raspberry Pi, presence/distance sensor and smartswitch.

Each student will configure their own class-provided RPi 1.
They will reflash a commercial smartplug (Sonoff S31) with open source firmware (ESPHome).
They will assemble a DIY motion sensor based on an ESP32 and a mm wave radar module (LD2410), and program it with ESPHome firmware.

Whom it’s for: People interested in home automation or “smart” things, but with local control independent of Big Tech. There is no software programming or soldering necessary. Some software programming will be done in-class, including vibe-coding (using AI).

What we’ll provide:

To take home: Raspberry Pi 1, parts for DIY motion sensor, Sonoff S31 energy-monitoring smartplug.

Leave at the lab: A laptop to communicate with the RPi, equipment to reprogram the smartplug, a light to test its operation, a WiFi network per-student to emulate their setup at home.

What to bring: Your home WiFi network credentials to ensure your devices work when you take them home. Your Password Manager to record your administrator password.

Please sign up at least 24 hours in advance. To check availability within 24 hours of this event’s start time, call (206) 659-1726.
